Henry C & Carrie P A Best Sherard Bible
Corrections made in Nov 2001 by Marguerite W. Whitley
Copy of the original Bible found in the Benjamin Best folder at the NSDAR Library
in Washington, DC.
This Bible is also in Dobbs County Bible Records by William Murphy but there are
some differences. According to Bill, Henry was the son of Williams and Susan
Holmes Sherard who lived in Wayne County. His wife, Caroline P. A. Best was a
daughter of Benjamin Williams Best and Smithy Loumisa Exum of Greene County.
A note attached to the Bible states the frontispiece of this Bible was missing,
and in order to establish some sort of date, I offer the following information
about the Rev. A. J. Finlayson.
The Rev. A. J. Finlayson was a Methodist Minister. He preformed several marriages
connected with the Sherard, Whitley and Applewhite Families. There is a marriage
bond on record between Virginia Whitley and William Henry Applewhite preformed by
the Rev. A. J. Finlayson, 24 Nov. 1866.
After the death of Williams Sherard, he married Williams’ Widow, Susan Holmes
Sherard.
The Bible was presented to H. C. Sherard by Rev. A. J. Finlayson
There is a Marriage Certificate in the Bible
This Certifies that the Rite of Holy Matrimony Was Celebrated Between Henry C.
Sherard of Wayne Co, NC and Carrie P. A. Best of Greene Co, NC on 26th Feb. 1874
at Benj. W. Best’s by John A. Andrews, Minister of Gospel of the Methodist
Episcopal Church South.
